Sandra Carvalho é atualmente Professora Auxiliar com Agregação na Universidade do Minho, no Departamento de Psicologia Básica. Entre 2021 e 2024, exerceu o cargo de Professora Auxiliar de Neuropsicologia na Universidade de Aveiro, onde também dirigiu o Curso de Psicologia, fundou e coordenou o Laboratório de Neuropsicologia Translacional e integrou o Conselho Diretivo do Departamento de Educação e Psicologia.
É licenciada e especializada em Psicologia Clínica, possui doutoramento em Psicologia pela Universidade do Minho e agregação em Psicologia pela Universidade de Aveiro. A sua investigação de doutoramento centrou-se nos aspetos psicofisiológicos do processamento emocional.
Após concluir o doutoramento, completou uma bolsa de pós-doutoramento de três anos na Harvard Medical School, onde desenvolveu trabalhos nas áreas de neurociências básicas e clínicas. Durante este período, especializou-se em ensaios clínicos e metodologias de investigação na Harvard. Adicionalmente, obteve certificação internacional em técnicas de estimulação cerebral não invasiva através de estudos na University College London, na Universidade de Göttingen e na Harvard Medical School.
Com mais de 19 anos de experiência em prática clínica e investigação, liderou e participou em inúmeros ensaios clínicos focados na neuroreabilitação. Estes estudos abordaram condições como dor neuropática, perturbações do espectro obsessivo-compulsivo, depressão severa, síndrome de Tourette e reabilitação pós-AVC ou lesão cerebral traumática. Possui também certificação em integridade e ética de investigação pela Harvard School of Public Health.
Sandra Carvalho é editora associada de seis revistas internacionais de renome. Desde 2014, é membro da International OCD Foundation e integra o conselho consultivo da International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology, publicada pela Elsevier.
Ao longo da sua carreira, publicou mais de 80 artigos e capítulos em revistas e livros internacionais de prestígio. Foi investigadora principal em projetos financiados pela FCT e contribuiu como membro central em projetos apoiados pelo NIH nos Estados Unidos.
