Sandra Carvalho is currently an Assistant Professor with Habilitation at the University of Minho, in the Department of Basic Psychology. From 2021 to 2024, she served as an Assistant Professor of Neuropsychology at the University of Aveiro, where she also directed the Psychology Course, founded and coordinated the Translational Neuropsychology Laboratory, and was a member of the Steering Committee of the Department of Education and Psychology.
She holds a degree and specialization in Clinical Psychology, a PhD in Psychology from the University of Minho, and Habilitation in Psychology from the University of Aveiro. Her doctoral research focused on the psychophysiological aspects of emotional processing.
After completing her PhD, Sandra undertook a three-year postdoctoral fellowship at Harvard Medical School, where her work encompassed both basic and clinical neurosciences. During this period, she also specialized in clinical trials and research methodologies at Harvard. Additionally, she obtained international certification in non-invasive brain stimulation techniques through studies at University College London, the University of Göttingen, and Harvard Medical School.
With over 19 years of experience in clinical practice and research, Sandra has led and participated in numerous clinical trials focused on neurorehabilitation. These trials addressed conditions such as neuropathic pain, obsessive-compulsive spectrum disorders, severe depression, Tourette syndrome, and rehabilitation following stroke or traumatic brain injury. She also holds certification in research integrity and ethics from the Harvard School of Public Health.
Sandra Carvalho is an associate editor for six renowned international journals. Since 2014, she has been a member of the International OCD Foundation and serves on the advisory board of the International Journal of Clinical and Health Psychology, published by Elsevier.
Throughout her career, Sandra has published over 80 articles and chapters in prestigious international journals and books. She has also been the principal investigator of projects funded by the FCT and has contributed as a key member to projects supported by the NIH in the United States.
